About Facial Asymmetry

Facial asymmetry refers to when the central lining of the face is not balanced/shifted to one side. This means that there is an imbalance of the left and right sides of the face. For example, one side of the jaw may look longer than the other side. Or one corner of the lip can droop lower than the opposite side. Factors such as malocclusion, genetics, and lifestyle habits can cause facial asymmetry.
Though options such as facial fillers and facial implants may help, facial bone surgery may be a more effective option in treating skeletal asymmetry.

Surgery for Facial Asymmetry

Depending on the circumstances, facial contouring surgery (ex: V-line surgery, cheekbone reduction surgery, etc) may help improve the appearance of facial asymmetry. However, if the jaw needs to be repositioned to achieve better symmetry, double jaw surgery can be more helpful.

Double jaw surgery is done by making incisions and reducing the area of the jaw that is longer. The jaws will then be shifted to a better position accordingly. In addition to double jaw surgery, facial contouring surgery such as genioplasty may be needed to correct the remaining asymmetry on the lower jaw or chin. By shifting the chin to the center, it will help make the balance of the face look centered.
