Malocclusion: Treating Underbite Through Surgery (Korean Double Jaw Surgery)

Double Jaw + V-Line Surgery for Underbite

What is Malocclusion & Underbite?

Malocclusion is a term referring to teeth that are misaligned. The different types of malocclusion can be classified as:

  • Class 1: The molars match when biting down. However, other teeth may overlap, overcrowd, or be too spaced out.
  • Class 2: When there is a prominent overbite. The upper molars will be positioned more forward than the lower molars. This can cause the upper jaw to protrude more than the lower jaw.
  • Class 3: When there is a serious underbite. The lower molars will be positioned more forward compared to the upper molars. This can cause the lower jaw to protrude and be longer than the upper jaw.
In some cases, an underbite cannot be treated with orthodontic treatment alone. Jaw surgery may be needed to position the jaw and occlusion to a better position.

Is Surgery Necessary for an Underbite?

In some cases, an underbite can cause disruption to a person's lifestyle. For example, some people may experience problems with their pronunciation, such as a lisp. Other symptoms caused by underbite include trouble chewing, pain in the mouth, asymmetry, and more. After a precise diagnosis is given by an orthodontist, if orthodontic treatment such as braces or palate expansion has limitations, this means that the problem is skeletal. Surgery will be effective in this case.

By examining each person's unique case, oral & maxillofacial surgeons will propose a surgery method depending on the person's severity, occlusion, and symptoms. Some patients may get lower jaw surgery only, to push the lower jaw back. However, some patients may need double jaw surgery to effectively treat their underbite.
