Treating an Underbite: A Collaborative Effort

What is an Underbite?

An underbite is a condition where the tooth does not align properly so the lower will project more outwards compared to the upper teeth. This can cause many challenges outside of daily activities. For example, it may be hard to chew, breathing can be difficult, and it may affect one's pronunciation and cause pain in the mouth and jaw. For mild cases, some people may seek treatment for cosmetic reasons as well.

Surgery for Underbite

Though braces can help treat an underbite by straightening misaligned teeth, if the problem lies with the jaw, surgery may be needed. Orthognathic surgery can help reduce the appearance of an underbite. Double Jaw surgery can help realign the jaw and mouth to the appropriate position. Depending on the severity of the case, an operation on both the upper and lower jaw may be needed.

Surgery & Orthodontic Treatment

When considering surgery for an underbite, it is crucial to speak with an orthodontist first. As correction of the teeth and jaw will need to be inspected by an orthodontist and oral & maxillofacial surgeon, oftentimes they will need to collaborate. Jaw surgery should not be seen as a replacement for orthognathic treatment. Surgery has limitations and can only fix the bone alignment so braces will be needed for better correction.
