Why do Double Jaw Surgery Patients with Malocclusion Need Accurate Diagnoses?

Hello. This is EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

This article will discuss the reasons why an accurate diagnosis is necessary for double jaw surgery patients with malocclusions.

Patients may undergo double jaw surgery to improve functional discomfort or insecurities caused by the malocclusion.

"What is a Malocclusion!?"

A malocclusion refers to a bite where the upper and lower teeth do not fit together when the mouth is closed, due to the abnormal positions of the teeth, causing aesthetic and functional problems.

In some instances, patients' malocclusions may be improved with orthodontic treatment alone, but for skeletal malocclusions, patients must undergo both double jaw surgery and orthodontic treatment.

"What is Double Jaw Surgery!?"

Double jaw surgery is an operation performed on the upper jaw or maxilla, and the lower jaw, or mandible, to adjust and fix the bones into a normal bite

Since double jaw surgery can improve one's chewing and speaking abilities by correcting the positioning of the jaw bones and teeth, double jaw surgery may be carried out for functional improvements as well.

The two primary Double Jaw Surgery methods are SSRO (Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy) and IVRO (Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy).

*What is SSRO (Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy)!?

The Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy has excellent initial immovability and is helpful in increasing the length of the jaw(s).

Additionally, the mouth is not wired shut with intermaxillary fixation after surgery, so patients can expect to eat and speak after surgery without major difficulties.

*What is IVRO (Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy)!?

The Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy is performed on the bone itself, eliminating the need for a separate surgery to remove the plates. The operation is also relatively short.

In addition, the likelihood of nerve damage is low, even for patients with thin bones, and those who undergo IVRO can anticipate improvements in their jaw joint function, facial asymmetry, and wide jawlines.

For "standard" double jaw surgery cases, patients receive a minimum of 6 months of preoperative orthodontic treatment before having surgery and undergoing the orthodontic treatment again for a prescribed period of time.

On average, it takes 2 years for the entire double jaw surgery process to be complete.

At EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we offer a Surgery-First Approach, which has the advantage of undergoing surgery first without preoperative orthodontic treatment.

"It is of utmost importance that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and orthodontist collaborate to treat the malocclusion."

Patients can expect minimized treatment periods and quick recoveries by undergoing surgery first and finalizing the bite through orthodontic treatment.

Additionally, to ensure that the surgery will be carried out safely, an accurate diagnosis from an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a systematic surgical plan are critical.

Many assessments are needed to diagnose malocclusions such as the *health of the periodontal tissue/*state of the bite/*positioning of the upper and lower jaws and their relationship with the teeth.

We tailor surgical plans appropriately to each individual patient through collaborative care with our orthodontist, digital dual-analysis, surgery simulation, CT scans, and customized wafer production by dental technicians.

Our surgeons are capable of maximizing the benefits and minimizing the risks of double jaw surgery through continuous research and extensive experience in performing SSRO (Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy) and IVRO (Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy) operations.

To improve the asymmetry of the facial bones across the three planes, our surgeons even consider rotations in 360-degree directions and provide detailed explanations during consultations at EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

All of our healthcare professionals and staff are always striving to maintain the safety of the clinic environment.

"From the first consultation through surgery, rounds, surgical site disinfection, and follow-up check-ups, we will be with you at each step of the process. "
