Double Jaw Surgery & Genioplasty (Revision) | Before & After

Procedures: Double Jaw + Genioplasty (Revision)

The following patient had visited EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to improve her concerns of lantern jaw, long face, protruded mouth, and facial asymmetry. Despite having V-line surgery done at another clinic, she was still concerned about her long chin and saw little improvement. She also had a history of orthodontic treatment (braces), but still had symptoms of a protruded mouth after the braces were taken off. Due to the minimal improvements from her initial surgery, she decided to undergo facial bone surgery again.

Facial Contouring Surgery Vs. Double Jaw Surgery

There is no doubt that double jaw surgery is a big procedure. Patients may need orthodontic treatment, the recovery process is long, and a liquid diet is needed after surgery. That is why some patients may seek to do only facial contouring surgery to improve their concerns. However, in some cases, facial contouring surgery alone may not be enough to improve some symptoms such as lantern jaw, protruded mouth, facial asymmetry, etc. That does not mean facial contouring surgery is not an effective surgery. It has benefits of making the jaw look more narrow, making the chin shorter, and making the cheekbones smaller.

What Are Some Signs That Double Jaw Surgery Might be Needed?

For example, a lantern jaw accompanied with malocclusion and/or a protruded mouth cannot be corrected through facial contouring surgery alone. Double jaw surgery is needed to correct the malocclusion and protruded mouth. In contrast, in the case where the asymmetry is only present in the lower jaw, with no additional symptoms, facial contouring alone may be able to correct it. The question is: How do I know if I need double jaw surgery or only facial contouring surgery? A precise diagnosis must be made through in-person examination, xrays, and CT scans. That is why it is important to seek a medical expert. After the patient and medical expert identitfy what needs to be corrected and understanding their goals, an effective surgery plan will be carried out.
