What Causes a Lantern Jaw?
There are several factors that may contribute to skeletal deformities, causing a lantern jaw. Factors include:
-Genetics
-Shape of the bones
-Size and alignment of the teeth
-Movement of the jaw muscles
-Lifestyle habits such as thumbsucking
Types of Lantern Jaw
Not all cases of lantern jaw are the same. In general, the main signs to look for are when the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. When seen from the side, the lower jaw will look protruded. If the issue is purely due to the teeth and there are no skeletal deformities, orthodontic treatment may be enough to treat it. However, if there is a problem in the bone structure, surgery will be needed.
Example #1: Case of lantern jaw where the jaw protrudes, accompanied with malocclusion (underbite).
Example #2: Case of lantern jaw where both the upper and lower teeth protrude, accompanied with malocclusion.
Example #3: Case of lantern jaw where only the chin protrudes, teeth occlusion is stable.
