Treating a Lantern Jaw Through Surgery in Korea

What is a Lantern Jaw Surgery?

A lantern jaw is when the lower jaw is longer and protruded than the upper jaw when seen from the side. In general, if the issue is caused by the teeth without there being any issue with the bone structure, it can be treated by orthodontic treatment alone. However, if the issue lies in the bone structure, double jaw surgery is needed to treat it.

Lantern Jaw Surgical Method by Type

The appropriate surgical method to treat a lantern jaw varies depending on the symptoms. There is lower jaw surgery that treats the lower jaw only, whereas double jaw surgery treats both the upper and the lower jaws. At EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the surgical method varies based on our precise diagnosis, and we offer the most appropriate surgical method to each of our patients. When performing lantern jaw surgery, we at EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery choose from either the Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy (IVRO) or the Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (SSRO) depending on the circumstances of the patient’s lantern jaw.

1. Lantern Jaw Case Where the Jaw is Protruded
Typical case with malocclusion (ex: underbite)

2. Lantern Jaw Case Where the Mouth is Protruded
When the mouth protrudes.

3. Lantern Jaw Case Where the Chin is Protruded

Lantern Jaw with normal teeth occlusion, double jaw surgery for aesthetic purpose. By using the upper jaw rotation technique, we change the angle of the occlusal plane, resulting in pushing the chin inward and making a visibly beautiful face shape.
