About Facial Asymmetry
No individual has a perfectly symmetrical face. However, asymmetry may be more severe in some individuals. The facial bones may be noticeably more developed on one side compared to the other. For example, one cheekbone may be higher or bigger on one side. Another example is that the lower jaw may be bigger on one side of the face. Depending on the severity of the asymmetry, as well as the dental occlusion, the type of surgery needed to improve facial asymmetry may vary.
Genioplasty And V-Line Surgery
After double jaw surgery, either genioplasty or V-line surgery can be performed to even out the rest of the asymmetry on the lower jaw. If the chin is slanted to one side, genioplasty will be performed to correct the position and center the chin. In the case where a patient may need V-line surgery, the jaw angle and chin will be reduced together. Depending on the severity of the asymmetry and the patient's needs, angle reduction may be performed on only one side.
Other Surgeries
Facial Contouring alone can help improve some cases of asymmetry. In the case of when the cheekbones are asymmetrical, cheekbone reduction surgery may be possible. Also, if a patient has a normal occlusion, but one side of their lower jaw is bigger, it is possible to correct it with V-line surgery. Double Jaw surgery is not always needed.
