Facial Asymmetry: How Can It Be Treated? [EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery]

Facial Asymmetry: What Is It?

Facial asymmetry is referred to cases where the
the central lining of the face is crooked due to the imbalance between the left and the right side of the face.

No one has a perfectly symmetrical face, but asymmetry can be more severe in some individuals compared to others. There may be a noticeable difference in the size of the left and right side of the face, size differences in the jawbones, and one side of the face may appear to look more “droopy.” For example, one corner of the lip may droop compared to the other side or the lower half of the face may look crooked, etc.

Surgery Method

In case there is an imbalance between the left and the right side of the face while having different left and right jawlines, in case only the left and right jaw lines differ, and in the case where there is also a lantern jaw or protruded mouth, the appropriate surgical method must be chosen considering the underlying causes for the facial asymmetry

Depending on the symptoms and severity of the asymmetry, the method of surgery can differ. One may only need chin surgery or V-Line surgery if the asymmetry lies on the lower jaw/chin and is not due to dental bite issues. If there is asymmetry on both the upper and lower jaw, Double Jaw surgery may be needed. By repositioning both of the jaws and making an incision on the area needed, can be an effective method to treat the asymmetry. In combination with Double Jaw Surgery, V-Line surgery or Chin Surgery (genioplasty) can be performed together to even out the remaining asymmetry of the lower jaw.
