Concerns
Many people may initially think that braces will be the solution for an underbite and other symptoms such as lantern jaw. However, in some cases, surgery may be necessary to improve these symptoms. The patient above had concerns of a long face, lantern jaw, and an underbite. Doing everyday activities such as chewing or biting noodles was difficult. Seeking to correct these concerns, he had gone to an orthodontist to get braces. However, after speaking to the orthodontist, the patient was recommended jaw surgery.
Approach
If there is a skeletal problem with the jaw, surgery can be a good method to correct the occlusion and jawbones. Through a dental mold, Xrays, and CT Scans, oral & maxillofacial experts can make an appropriate diagnosis and deem whether a surgery first approach is needed or if braces before surgery would be a better option. Some patients may need to level and realign their teeth before surgery if a surgery-first approach proves to be difficult.
Why Double Jaw & Vline?
Based on each patient's wants and needs, they may get recommended different types of surgeries. Double jaw surgery can help in reducing the appearance of a long face by reducing the mid-length of the face, or re-position the jaw so that the underbite and appearance of a lantern jaw can improve. Finally, doing vline surgery can help in different ways. It can make the appearance of the lower jaw look sharper and more narrow and reposition the chin backward for patients with a severe protruding chin. In cases of asymmetry, the vline can help balance out the remaining asymmetry in the lower jaw after a T-osteotomy is done to shorten the case.
