What is Facial Asymmetry?
When the central lining of the face is
twisted or uneven, this can be a sign of “facial asymmetry.” There is often an
imbalance between the left side of the face and the right side. The jaw bone will differ as one may be shorter than the other, and one cheekbone may seem bigger on one side.
There are many other symptoms such as the balance of the eyes being uneven, one corner of the lips may droop more than the other, and so on.
Factors to Consider
The surgical method must be chosen considering factors
where a lantern jaw or protruded mouth is prevalent. After careful
examination and with the help of X-rays and CT scans, surgery will be carried out accordingly to the patient’s diagnosis. Depending on the degree of the facial asymmetry, surgery for both the upper and lower jaw may be needed or surgery only on the lower jaw can be carried out.
Double Jaw & V-Line for Facial Asymmetry
Double jaw surgery is usually accompanied by v-line surgery. After cutting the upper and lower jaw and putting them in the appropriate position, v-line surgery can aid in evening out the remaining asymmetry on the jawline/chin. The bone is repositioned so that the chin will match the central lining of the face.
