What is a long face?

Normally, the length of the face is 1.3 times the width of the face. A long face refers to cases where the face is much longer than this norm.

While a long face may be attributable to the width of the face being too narrow, it is attributable to the length of the face being too long and therefore diagnosed as a ‘long face’ in most cases.

In cases of a long face, patients may not be able to fully close their mouth during their ordinary day to day life, and their upper teeth and gum may be overly visible when smiling or laughing.

Moreover, they experience teeth malocclusion with having openbite in often cases.

Long face surgical method

The surgical method to treat and correct a long narrow face depends on the underlying issues of the face.

If the jaw is simply protruded or only the chi) is just long in length, the chin only can be cut to correct. However, this must be proceeded with caution as the face may look unnatural after cutting the chin only.

Maxilla (upper jaw)

A surgery decision is selectively made on maxilla, based on the status of the long face.

In case the face is insufficiently sized forward and backward due to excessive delay in growth,

in case vertical height is abnormal, and

in case there is excessive facial asymmetry,

the maxilla is cut horizontally in most cases and then re-positioned to the desired location.

Mandible (lower jaw)

SSRO or IVRO

Depending on the patient symptoms, the most appropriate method between IVRO and SSRO is chosen and used.

Chin (the edge of the jaw)

If the length of the face is long primarily due to overly developed lower jaw, then surgery is performed to shorten the length by cutting only the chin.
