What is a lantern jaw?
A
lantern jaw is a case where the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw, and the
lower jaw is protruded forward when seen from the side.
In
general, if the issue is confined to teeth without there being any issue on the
bone structure, it can be treated by orthodontics only. However, if there is
any issue on the bone structure, double jaw surgery becomes a must.
The
appropriate surgical method to treat a lantern jaw varies depending on the
symptoms.
There
is lower jaw surgery that treats the lower jaw only, whereas there is double
jaw surgery that treats both the upper and the lower jaws.
At
EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the surgical method varies based on our
precise diagnosis, and we offer the most appropriate surgical method to each of
our patients.
When
performing lantern jaw surgery, we at EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
chooses from either the Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy (IVRO) or the
Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (SSRO) depending on the circumstances of the
patient’s lantern jaw.
