Symptoms after jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery)

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Surgery performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth. Surgery can improve breathing, chewing and speaking. While the patient’s appearance may be dramatically enhanced as a result of the surgery, orthognathic surgery is performed to correct functional problems.

How do I feel right after surgery?
One of the most difficult symptoms of surgery is breathing.

What makes breathing uncomfortable?
There are two big reasons for it. It's because of bleeding and swelling. No matter how surgeons control hemorrhages during surgery, there are a few bleeding after 1~2 days.

If you have nasal discharge or saliva. Mixing with secretions can cause breathing problems. And then the inside of the nose will get swollen, right? The inside of the nose and neck get swollen because the surgery is conducted inside the nose. It narrows your airway. So it takes about 1-2 weeks to breathe smoothly. It's a little stuffy during that period to breathe.

There are also many kinds of post-op pain. Pain is a direct pain in the area of surgery. Also, because it is anesthetized, the air tube goes into the neck and stays under the whole body anesthesia. You will have a sore throat from it. Most of the pain is controlled by painkillers. Generally, there aren't that many patients who feel extreme pain during surgery.
