What is Prognathism (Lantern Jaw)
If your jaw
protrudes, it’s known as prognathism. Typically, prognathism refers to the
lower jaw sticking out more than usual. However, there are several different
types of prognathism:
It can cause
an overbite or underbite depending
on which jaw is affected. Prognathism may be a sign of an underlying medical
condition, which could require treatment.
How is Prognathism (Lantern Jaw) Treated?
In most cases of prognathism, a combination
of maxillofacial
surgery and orthodontic treatment is used to correct the
malocclusion, or misalignment, of the jaws. Depending on the type and severity
of the condition, the procedure may involve surgical modification to one or both
of the jaws.
The appropriate surgical method to treat a
lantern jaw varies depending on the symptoms.
There is lower jaw surgery that treats the
lower jaw only, whereas there is double jaw surgery that treats both the upper
and the lower jaws.
At EU, the surgical method varies based on
our precise diagnosis and we offer the most appropriate surgical method to
each of our patients.
“When performing lantern jaw surgery, we at EU Oral &
Maxillofacial Surgery chooses from either the Intraoral Vertical Ramus
Osteotomy (IVRO) or the Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (SSRO) depending on the
circumstances of the patient’s lantern jaw.”
