What type of facial bone contouring surgery is right for me?

Hello! This is Dr. Shin Hee Jin of EU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery :)

Today we will discuss jaw correction surgeries. Let's take some time to learn about the different types of double jaw surgeries.

Double jaw surgeries have actually been known by a different name until the early 2000s. The name double jaw surgery comes from the fact that both the upper and lower jaws are operated on.

Let's go over double jaw surgeries case by case. :)

We can organize jaw correction surgeries into these three categories.

For double jaw surgeries, both the upper and lower jaws are operated on in one procedure, while surgery that only involves the lower chin is called lower jaw surgery.

Looking at the image labeled "ASO surgery (protruding mouth surgery)," there are 12 front teeth.

ASO surgery moves only the 12 front teeth: the 6 upper front teeth and 6 lower front teeth.

Cases that can benefit from surgery can be divided into three categories.

The first is correcting the protruding mouth with ASO surgery (protruding mouth surgery).

However, in some of those cases, the chin may be on the longer side.

For patients with longer chins, correcting the protruding mouth with surgery may not be enough to yield ideal results.

If only the lower jaw is protruding, (corrective) lower jaw surgery can be performed.

However, these cases are not common.

If the lower jaw protrudes outwards, then the upper jaw would also stick out or the protrusion of the lower jaw would be misaligned with the upper jaw.

Since such cases are common, only undergoing lower jaw surgery isn't enough to correct the problem for most patients.

Cases in which ASO surgery (protruding mouth surgery) and double jaw surgery are performed in one operation are referred to as triple jaw surgery.

For patients who have protruding mouths accompanied by recessed chins, undergoing one type of surgery may not be completely satisfied with the results.

Why do diagnoses differ by clinic?

Some patients want to limit the (amount of) surgery that they get, while others want to see a big change.

Patients' priorities are strongly considered!

What are the differences between protruding mouth surgery and double jaw surgery?

There are many differences, one of which is that mouth protrusion surgery involves the extraction of teeth. A total of 4 teeth will be extracted.

However, most double jaw surgery cases do not involve the extraction of teeth. If retaining one's teeth is important to a patient, they may choose double jaw surgery for this reason.

Diagnoses may differ based on each patient's priorities and how they align with their doctor's priorities. Learning about each procedure's pros and cons can aid patients in their decision-making.
