Folding the chin?

Let’s talk about everything related to chin advancement surgery!

Hello! This is Dr. Kim Jong Yoon from Eu Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center

Today, I will explain the chin advancement surgery which is known as a Lantern Jaw surgery. I will let you know how to prevent the jagged edge that inevitably usually happens and what is our exclusive chin advancement-folding method!

Chin advancement surgery is one of the methods to fix the lantern Jaw,

which moves the chin forward.

At first, what would be the differences between genioplasty and chin advancement(sliding genioplasty)?

Below our lower teeth, there are holes on both sides of the chin that nerves are coming out.

Genioplasty indicated the surgery that is placed on the tip of the chin which is between these holes, chin advancement surgery is the type of genioplasty when you cut the chin and bring it forward.

In the case of the chin advancement surgery, if there’s an asymmetry, we move the position of the tip of the chin to the left or right to make it symmetry.

Also, we can improve the short chin and lantern jaw effectively.

But, when we move the chin forward, a jagged edge happens inevitably.

The jagged edge refers to the step that is created between the original jaw and the chin when it is moved forward.

This jagged edge is today’s main subject.

How is the jagged edge happens?

Usually, the maximum adjustment of the chin is 8mm.

First of all, the average thickness of the chin bone is 10mm, if you move all the 10mm forward, the bones are not overlapped, so it might appear that the bones do not adhere again.

To face and attach the bones, we move the chin a maximum of 8mm and fix it with the titanium plate.

From this, the jagged edge happened between the jaw and the chin moved forward.

Then how we can prevent this jagged edge won’t be happen?

At EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we perform chin folding advancement surgery to reduce jagged edges.

Chin folding advancement cut a bone fragment in two, cut the middle as a triangle shape, and moves the two parts forward so it is able to fold.

In that way, we can reduce the jagged edge significantly which happens to move the chin only forward.

Also, increasing overlapped amount of bone fragments increases the stability and reduces the negative side effects of the surgery.

Today we talked about chin advancement surgery and the jagged edge that happens after surgery.
