Treating Lantern Jaw + Underbite With Surgery

Before/After Double Jaw & V-Line Surgery

Can I Treat a Lantern Jaw & Underbite At the Same Time?

Through orthognathic double jaw surgery, a lantern jaw and underbite can be treated at the same time. The lower jaw will be fractured and moved back in case of an underbite.
Double jaw surgery can then realign the bite to a better position after the lower jaw has been pushed back. In combination with double jaw surgery, V-Line surgery can help reduce the length and width of the chin. Through both of these surgeries, facial harmony can be achieved.

Orthodontic Treatment
In some cases, orthodontic treatment such as braces, alone, cannot completely improve the underbite. The reason can be due to the jaw bone itself, and not just the teeth. In this case, surgery is necessary in order to completely improve the underbite. For each patient's unique case, a surgery-first approach may not be eligible. As some would have to have the teeth straightened out before surgery. That is why a precise diagnosis is necessary with an orthodontist and with an oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
